Athlete Spotlight: Carly LaCasse
By Mia Hall
Carly LaCasse, a junior, is a three-season athlete, and an assistant captain for ice hockey at Bourne High School. LaCasse has been on the ice playing ice hockey since she was about five and not many people can say that they have been playing a sport since they were that young. Currently, she plays for the Cape Cod Storm in addition to BHS hockey.
“I was pretty little so I don’t remember,” she said. “My parents probably thought I would enjoy it and that is was a good idea. I’m very thankful for my parents who got me into playing when I was a little kid because it’s such an entertaining game to be a part of.”
LaCasse is a three-season sport athlete who play field hockey during the fall, ice hockey during the winter, and lacrosse in the spring. Field hockey and ice hockey seem to be similar in how to play but they have their differences.
“Field hockey and ice hockey are similar because you both use a stick and need good stick handling skills,” she said, “but they are also very different. Obviously field hockey is on a field and ice hockey is on the ice, also they have a different amount of players on the field/ice. In field hockey, you aren’t allowed to use the outside of your stick, while in ice hockey you can. As far as the nets go, they are different sizes, the nets in field hockey are much bigger than the ones in ice hockey“ LaCasse replied.
LaCasse has no preference over field hockey and ice hockey. “I really like both sports. I don’t prefer one more than the other, they are just as equally fun.” LaCasse remarked.
Most people would agree that playing both of these sports raise one’s risk for injury, as they are very aggressive and demanding. “I have never sustained any major medical injury, but you have to be very careful because anyone could get hurt, it can be a dangerous game at times” said LaCasse.
As far as a position that she plays, she plays forward, and Lacasse have never sustained any major medical injury but it is very possible that anyone who is in the game can easily get an injury.
As anyone would assume, the physicality and rules during ice hockey for girls is different than boys, as LaCasse would agree.
“Girls ice hockey is a very physical game but for the boys, it is much rougher. Boys are allowed to check, and girls aren’t allowed because it is against the rules. Girls show their physicality by using their strength to get by people or by moving people away from the net. Girls have to be a little more sneaky with how they win a game, where the boys are allowed to actually show their physicality,” LaCasse replied. “As far as the rules, boys are allowed to check, meaning that they are allowed to hit the other player with their body moving them away from the puck and distracting them, but that is the main differences in rules for girls and boys ice hockey.” said LaCasse.
LaCasse is a part of a high school team that involves four different high schools. The team plays well together even though they are from different schools. That doesn’t stop them from playing their best out on the ice. Being an assistant captain seems like it would be difficult, because not all girls are from the same school.
LaCasse remarked, “It’s not difficult, but it’s different from many other teams. It’s fun meeting new people from other towns and getting to know them.” As far as being an assistant captain Lacasse explains, “It’s not hard, you just have to be a good leader for the other people on the team because they look up to you, but it’s good to know that we all get along for being from different towns.”
“The team plays really well together, considering many of us haven’t been playing together since we were young,” LaCasse responded. “People on many teams grow up with each other but not this team. Due to how we are all from different schools, it is interesting see how we work together as one,” LaCasse seems not to believe in the fact that just because her teammates are all from different schools, it doesn’t affect how they play as one.
“I enjoy many things about playing ice hockey. One of my favorite things about it is the fact that I get to meet new and great people that I have become great friends with over the years. If it wasn’t for this team, I wouldn’t have gotten the chance to meet new people and get a new experience,” LaCasse stated.

Student Athlete Spotlight: Aly Hickey
by Mia Hall
Aly Hickey, tri-captain of the Bourne High School varsity volleyball team knew that she wanted to play volleyball since she was 6 or 7. Honestly, how many people can actually say that they wanted to participate in a sport that they love since they were that young?
“As soon as my sisters would let me play with them, either first or second grade, is when I started playing volleyball. I started playing for a team when I was 11 but I participated in clinics until I was old enough to play for a real team,” she said.
Hickey has played on a total of eight different teams since she started her volleyball career as a child. For a person to know that they want to play a sport for so many years, and stick with it and enjoy it actually means that she is truly passionate about it and want to stay with it for as long as she can.
“ I’ve played on eight different teams, which include the Bourne High School freshmen, JV and Varsity teams, two Cape Cod junior teams, and three Pilgrim (League) teams.”
In a sport that only has five players on the court at a time, Aly Hickey is the setter. One of the most important positions on the court, and one of the hardest positions to play. “It’s a difficult position because you have to be there every time to get the second pass, you are the only one who can touch it, and if it’s a bad pass you have to do your best to get the ball and to prep it for the other players to send it over the net.”
“ I’m a setter. The setter is the one who sets up the offense. I’m in charge of the offense,” she replied. Hickey especially likes this position. “It's the second player to get the ball, and it's like my job that I get it and I'm hustling to get it. I don’t want to sound greedy but it’s my ball.”
Keeping one’s mind on the game without letting the school day or weekend plans get in the way, can be difficult. Not for Aly. “ Actually no, When I have a bad day I look forward to practice. When I play volleyball it's like nothing else matters,” she insisted.
What exactly does hickey like most about playing? “My favorite thing about playing volleyball is that I like being a part of a team. I like that volleyball is a different sport and not similar to the rest. It's a close group on the team because there isn’t a lot of us.”
She added it is a great thing to be close with your teammates. It means that there is a better chance of playing well “when you get a long rather. If you hate each other, playing a game together doesn’t go as well. It’s great to know that volleyball is a different sport and not like any other sport.”
Hickey has high hopes for the young BHS varsity team this year. “I think that we are a young team this year. We have five sophomores and there are only ten people on the team so half of our team is sophomores. We are a very small team but I think that we are above average for a team with only ten people.”
They are already off to a solid start. “We have won more than we have lost this year. We have only had nine games so far. We win, I feel, like there are teams that we go in knowing that we can win easily and there are games that we can win but it will be a close game. We can beat any team when we try.”
